Period Hallways with Dado Rails and Cornicing

Period hallways in Victorian terraces along Wendover Road and the central Aylesbury market-town streets have tall ceilings, original cornicing, and dado rails at mid-height. Wallpapering a full-height period hallway with a patterned paper requires long drops from ceiling to dado, precise trimming at the cornice profile, and vertical registration maintained past the dado divide to the lower wall zone.

A patterned paper in a hall with a 3-metre ceiling has drops of well over 2 metres. Any deviation from vertical in the first drop propagates as a visible diagonal through subsequent drops. For the painted hallway treatment in period terraces, see our hallway painting page when built.

Full Room Wallpapering

Full room wallpapering in period properties demands a higher preparation standard than feature walls. Rooms in central Aylesbury Victorian terraces typically have walls that are not perfectly plumb, ceilings that are not level, and corner joints that have opened over time. Pattern matching must be planned around these variables before the first drop is hung.

Patterned wallpaper with a large vertical repeat requires careful advance planning on drop sequence to minimise waste. For period dining rooms in Aston Clinton cottages, see our painters and decorators in Aston Clinton page for local detail.

Feature Walls

A feature wall in a modern Buckingham Park lounge or open-plan family room can change the feel of a space. Smooth plasterboard in these 2000s homes provides a good surface for most paper types. The preparation step that must not be skipped is a sealing primer on bare or previously painted plasterboard before any paste goes on.

Without it, the paper absorbs moisture unevenly from the wall, causing bubbles that pull away from the surface as it dries. For painted feature walls and bold accent colours, see our feature wall painting page when built.

Lining Paper

Lining paper is often the right first step on period plaster walls in central Aylesbury before a fine-finish decorative paper goes on top. Original lime plaster walls that are uneven but structurally sound benefit from a horizontal lining-paper layer. It bridges minor surface variation and gives the decorative paper a consistent base to bond to.

We use size compounds compatible with lime plaster. For the full lime-plaster primer approach, see our interior painting page. In Bedgrove and Walton Court post-war estate stock, lining paper hung crossways provides a clean base that rolling emulsion alone cannot achieve.

Wallpaper Removal

Old wallpaper removal in Aylesbury’s Victorian terrace stock is more involved than it looks. Layers of pre-1980s paper hang directly on plaster, and soaking through multiple layers risks softening the plaster surface itself. We work carefully through layered paper on plaster walls, particularly where the plaster is original lime rather than modern gypsum.

In Bedgrove and Walton Court post-war semis, paper often hangs directly on plasterboard without a lining layer. Overly aggressive soaking can raise the board paper facing. We assess the wall type before starting and use the appropriate removal technique for the surface.

Here’s How It Works

1. Site visit and surface assessment

We assess the wall surfaces, confirm whether plaster needs lining, check for damp on north-facing walls, measure the room accurately, and discuss pattern choice and drop planning. We advise on paper type suitability for the specific surface.

2. Surface preparation

Existing paper is stripped where required. Walls are washed, filled, and sanded. New plaster or plasterboard gets a sealing size coat to reduce the initial suction and allow the paste to stay workable long enough for precise positioning.

3. Lining paper where specified

Hung horizontally on uneven or previously papered surfaces. Allowed to dry fully before the decorative paper goes on.

4. Paper hanging

Drops are cut in sequence with the pattern planned in advance. Paste is applied to the paper or the wall depending on paper type. Vertical alignment is checked on every drop. Butt joints are smoothed flat and trimmed at cornicing and skirting.

5. Final inspection

Seams, bubbles, and trim lines are checked once the paste has dried fully. Any edges that have lifted are re-seated and trimmed. We advise on how long to wait before the room is used normally.

Wallpapering Costs in Aylesbury

Prices below are estimates only. Every project is different. Call 01296 938133 for a precise quote.

Wallpapering costs depend on the paper type, room geometry, and the preparation required. A simple feature wall in a modern room is at the lower end. A full-room hang in a period hallway with dado rails and a large-repeat pattern is at the higher end.

Three things drive the price:

Room geometry

A straightforward rectangular room with plumb walls takes less time than a period hallway with dado rails, cornicing, and a visible staircase wall. Period geometry adds planning and cutting time.

Paper type

Standard vinyl paper is more forgiving to hang than fine embossed or delicate hand-printed papers. Heavy paper with a large vertical repeat adds material cost through off-cut waste.

Preparation requirement

A smooth plasterboard wall in a Buckingham Park modern home needs only a size coat before hanging. A lime plaster wall in a central Aylesbury terrace that needs stripping, filling, and lining paper adds a full preparation day before the decorative paper can go on.

Aylesbury Decorators are insured for every wallpapering job and most of our work comes from repeat clients and recommendations across HP19, HP20, HP21, and HP22.

Typical ranges:

Feature wall, 2000s semi in Buckingham Park or Watermead (smooth plasterboard, standard vinyl paper, single wall): £200–380.

Full room, period dining room in Wendover or Aston Clinton (corniced walls, large-repeat pattern, lining paper included): £800–1,400 depending on room size and paper type.
